Braga & Guimarães

Braga is a city in northern Portugal, known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and religious significance. It is the third-largest city in Portugal and one of the oldest Christian cities in the world (with over 2000 years of history).

The Roman legacy is another factor that attracts visitors to Braga, often referred to as “Portuguese Rome” due to its origins in the Roman city of Bracara Augusta.

In Braga, you will be visiting the following landmarks:

Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte

A famous pilgrimage site situated on top of a hill, known for its beautiful Baroque staircase and incredible views of the city. You can climb more than 600 steps or take the funicular for an easier ascent.

Braga Cathedral (Sé de Braga)

One of the oldest cathedrals in Portugal, with construction dating back to the 12th century. Its mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque styles is truly impressive.

Braga Historical Center

We will stroll through the charming streets of the city, filled with cafés, shops, and monuments, with highlights such as Praça da República (the main square) and the Fonte do Ídolo.

In Braga’s historic center, we will end the morning with a delicious lunch at a traditional Braga restaurant.

After lunch, we will head to Guimarães area, where we will start by visiting the Sanctuary of Penha.

At the Sanctuary of Penha, you will have the opportunity to visit it as you please and enjoy the stunning views of the city.

Next, we will make our way to the center of Guimarães, where Portugal was born.

Guimarães, known as the “birthplace of Portugal,” is a vibrant city in northern Portugal, renowned for its history, architecture, and culture.

There, we will visit a palace from the early 1420s, where Afonso, Count of Barcelos, lived. We will also explore the historic center of Guimarães, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
